jb clark said... This was my favorite activity in New Zealand, and we did plenty of tours and things on both South and North Island. This wonderful family has been rescuing and supporting penguins for decades, with ongoing research to help more of them survive. The drive to their protected cove is gorgeous, with photo stops and commentary about the history, geology, and wildlife of Banks Peninsula. We tromped around for an hour or so, checking on penguins, who were molting, and thus taking shelter in boxes. We also saw fur seals on the shore. Then we watched penguins bobbing in the cove, waiting for nightfall to come, to return to the shelter of their burrows and boxes. I would love to return in November during mating season!
